DARK SHADOWS

?In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet-or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better…

JUAN IS DEAD

Leah Westwood (2)
New Art /

Beautiful mosaic art by Leah Reeves

Juan is Dead is a line of tile-based artwork by my friend, Leah Reeves. She is a former ad agency creative from London, and now makes these pieces fulltime. Each one is totally unique and made by hand. Most works feature her character, Juan, and friends from his world from the afterlife. It’s a curiously dark but colourful world. You’ll never look at tiles in the same way again.

FABIAN CIRAOLO WORX

Wicked illustration work by Fabian Ciraolo

I found the illustrations of Fabian Ciraolo whilst trawling through some Tumblr site. I stuck up his Dorothy and Salvador above my desk and every creative that has come to chat to me stops and says out loud ‘Wow, who did THAT?’ And then I tell them, Fabian Ciraolo. So now I’m telling you. Who else would be mashing up pop culture references, like what looks like Lana Del Rey’s body with Judy Garland as Dorothy and Salvador Dali in a Vampire Weekend tee? I love it.

GOREZONE 29 RETRO

Reinterpreting classical art in a contemporary aesthetic frame is by no means a new concept, as it has been around for decades, yet the series curated by art director Irene Gallo from Tor.com sure is innovative. Gallo brought together several talented photographers, among whom John Mattos, Tim O’Brien, Greg Manchess, and Michael Whelan. She allowed them to essentially run wild with some of the world’s most famous works of art, among which Whistler’s Mother, Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase and Grant Wood’sAmerican Gothic. Now, the reinterpretation process was not completely free of artistic constraints, as the given theme was to incorporate visually representative elements from the geek subculture.
The end result includes elements from the Star Wars saga, DC Comics imagery, as well as works that make use of the Muppets’ visual trademarks. The series is bound to create some controversy, as postmodernism is generally want to do. Interferences between high-culture and so-called pop culture never go down completely smoothly: by blending imagery from one corner of the spectrum with elements from a more pretentious area of artistic expression, the artists involved create tension. Tension is at once creative and bound to generate feedback from audiences, but it is also conducive at conflict. We’re highly looking forward to witness a debate on these works, between the Star Wars geek freaks and the artsy snobs. Just saying.
